Safety Briefing

The idea of this page is that if you are coming to sail with us, you can get an advance look at the safety arrangements, rather than get all the information as soon as you step on board. This way they'll have extra time to sink in and you may even have time to come up with some questions of your own.

Lifejackets:

Everyone should have a lifejacket either of their own or belonging to the boat. Wearing a lifejacket (or harness) is mandatory on deck under sail / on deck anytime at night or in poor visibility or poor sea state / on deck anytime if under 16 years if age / in the tender at anytime / or at any other time when the skipper asks.

When not in use - keep lifejackets clsoe to your berth

  Jack lines and harnesses:

Jack lines are normally stored out of sunlight but should be fitted before setting out. Note that the lanyard for the jacklines must be lashed thorugh BOTH the cleat and webbing eye (not just round the cleat).
Harnesses and lanyards are stored in the locker beside the navigation desk. Wear a harness if the Skipper asks you to do so.

 Fire:

Take care to avoid allowing a fire to start!

Small fire extinguishers are provided in the aft cabin and forepeak.

2 larger fire extinguishers are provided at the bottom of the companion way steps and by the cooker.

First Aid:

The first aid kit is carried in a yellow water tight case, within the sliding locker front, next to the navigation desk.

 Gas:

The only gas appliance on the boat is the cooker, and is supplied from a gas locker in the stardboard side cockpit locker, where two cylinders are kept (one in-use and one spare). The supply is isolated bothat the cylinder and with a valve close to the cooker, in the locker under the cooker.

A fixed gas alarm is carried which is hardwired and will activate whenever the house electrical supply is switched on.
The gas alarm will sound if it detects a leak

Take care to avoid allowing gas to escape from the cooker, as it can sink to the bilges and form an explosive mixture with air !

Radio:

An advanced marine VHF 'DSC' radio is fitted. In the event of an emergency and no other more competent person being availabe to send a distress message:
  • Check the 'House' battery is switched on
  • Push the power button to turn the VHF radio on.
  • Lift the red shutter and press the button.
  • If possible, scroll through the emergency options - if not the emergency will still be sent.

It is absolutely imperative NOT to send un-necessary distress messages.

 Life raft:

The life raft is stored in the aft cabin in a blue valise (bag). It should be deployed only under the guidance of the person in charge. Instructions are printed on the side of the valise (bag)

Flares and other emergency equipment:

Emergncy equipment including pyrotechnics (flares) are carried in the locker underneath the navigation desk.

Flares are in the yellow canister

Only use these under the guidance of the person in charge. Leave them in that location so they can be found in an emergency.
